'Just like stories, Music is to be shared'

Hi! I’m Marnix Mohrmann, a neoclassical composer and pianist based in Middelburg, The Netherlands.

Some people write with words, some with paint. I write with notes. Each of my pieces is a small story carrying a certain emotion. Just like stories, music is to be shared. Let me bring you along on my journey, told through the gentle tones of the piano.

The stories behind the music

April 2026

Pliothyrina was written in the wake of losing someone dear, channeling grief into a tapestry of sound. I balanced the weight of loss with the warmth offered by the piano, blending chords, rhythm, and melody into a powerful remembrance.

To honour the memory of our friend, I asked Merel van Rens to create the artwork. She weaved the colours of his life into a beautiful representation. Her version was later adapted into the official white and blue artwork.

Original artwork for Pliothyrina, depicting a seashell in four different ways.

AD21Music organizes seasonal sketches, bundles of piano sketches that reflect a particular season. I was honoured to have been asked to contribute to the winter version. The resulting song Hearth’s Embrace is like a warm blanket by the hearth on a cold day.

February 2025

On a quiet late evening I was sitting behind the piano. My eyes were closing little by little as the energy for the day was leaving me. While gently pressing the piano keys, to not disturb the neighbours, I wrote a song that seamlessly flowed and repeated infinitely. Sleep I was born.

Little did I know that it would become a major hit. On release it was immediately picked up by Apple Music’s editorial playlists, where it still resides to this day.

Saying goodbye to someone knowing that it is the last time you see them is difficult. It brings a feeling of pain, unfairness, helplesness. You say your goodbye, they say their goodbye, together you say goodbye. For the last time.

To this day, when I play this song, I feel the same emotions as when I wrote the piece. It serves as my personal reminder for how powerful music can be.

November 2023

L’île, the album that started my entire piano career. It will always deserve special mention as without it, no piano compositions would have ever followed.

At the time I was living in France, working hard on other music projects, when I had the urge to start composing for solo piano. Being only used to playing piano covers and for myself, it felt a bit strange to be a composer. It took quite some time to write four songs, having to figure everything out.

Right when I finished the songs I received an email from the artist Ô Lake and his label Night-Night Records. Asking if I also composed my own music. What a coincidence! (or meant to be?).

I sent my demos and he immediately signed them. And to even greater surprise, the music resonated with a large audience. From playing piano since 7 years old to my first music ‘hit’ being a piano solo, it all feels too surreal to be a mere coincidence.

Long story short, L’Île is where it all started. In Lille, France.
